ONLINE VIDEO TUTORIAL : PAINT A KINGFISHER IN WATERCOLOUR

In this video I will show you how to paint a beautiful Kingfisher from start to finish. The video includes lots of tips and techniques as I demonstrate how to create different texture effects such as feathers, bark, sky. It includes principles of layering colours, softening and blending hard lines and shapes, reserving white paper, painting the bird’s eye, painting wet-in-wet etc.

MATERIALS

PAINTS: The video includes details of my palette colours for this particular painting, but please feel free to use the ones you already have, it is important that you are comfortable with the colours you know. As long as you have a blue, a red and a yellow you will be able to mix different colours and follow the demonstration. If you like any of the pigments I use, you can always treat yourself of course!

BRUSHES: I use a range of different brushes sizes 0-14 (usually a 2, 6 or 8, 12, and a rigger). It’s possible to paint with a single large brush if it has a good point!

PAPER: If there is one thing I’m a strong advocate of, it’s using decent watercolour paper. If you use cheap paper you will spend many frustrating hours trying to achieve good results. I use Saunders Waterford High White NOT 140lb or 200lb, or Bockingford NOT 140lb or 200lb.

OTHER: Masking fluid, paper towel, pencil and rubber, palette for mixing paint, water ……. oh, and a paper clip (yes really!)
